Weekly Packers News from Twitter and other Sources by Al Bracco and Jayme Joers. (As heard on Cheesehead Radio 9/30/10 ) Packer News 9/24/10 – 9/30/10

Al: As if the sting of losing to the Bears was not bad enough, the Packers’ Nick Collins had to endure the taunts of an idiot Bears fans after the game. Collins was spit on and taunted with several racial slurs. Normally the laid back, quiet type, Collins reacted by throwing his mouthguard at the fan om his way to the lockerroom. If this were hockey, the entire Packers team would have been in the stands.

Jayme: Well Al, while the Packers team remained on the field, they all stood firmly in their defense of Collins and his reaction to what happened. For his part, Collins apologized for not being the bigger man and just walking away. Teammates Donald Driver, Aaron Rodgers and Daryn Colledge all made comments appealing to fans to remember that the players are human and deserve some respect for what they do. The incident is still under review by the NFL.

Al: Something else the NFL should review is their over-the-top rules protecting the quarterback. Both Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers were the beneficiaries of some very questionable roughing the passer calls. We all understand that marquee quarterbacks sell the game, and losing them to injury is bad for the sport, but has the league gone too far to protect it’s revenues? Is two hand touch on the quarterbacks that far off from becoming reality?

Jayme: The economic reality of Packers games on local neighborhoods was made apparent this week when a study commissioned by Brown County was released to the public. The 10 Green Bay Packers games at Lambeau Field last year brought in 123 million dollars, with training camp adding another 7 million. The study went on to estimate that adding another 10,000 seats to Lambeau Field would bring in almost 2 million per game to the area. The Packers have discussed another expansion of Lambeau Field, as well as using it for other events. Rumor is that concerts at the stadium will become a reality in 2011.

Al: A big dose of reality is in order for what seems like the majority of Packer fans out there. Reading the questions given to Lori Nickels on her live chat Wednesday, you would think the Packers were 0-4 and had just lost to the Lions. It’s fine to be mad about a game and to be critical of what went wrong in the game, but don’t extrapolate that anger to disparage the team. Alex Tallitsch said it best in a recent post on packerslounge.com. The Packers had a perfect storm disaster of a game, and still only lost on a late field goal. Step down from that ledge, my friends. Ironically, I think the Packers will be FINE…

Jayme: Nothing would be finer, Al, then Lambeau field rocking on Sunday as the the Packers demolish the lowly Lions. But these aren’t your father’s Lions anymore. The Lions have made a lot of roster improvements and now have some legitimate young talent, although Matt Stafford and Jahvid Best could both be sidelined this Sunday. From the Packers’ perspective, Mike McCarthy will be looking to get his team back on track, and eliminating the plethora of mental errors we saw least week.

News from the Packers Twitterverse…

Jayme: Many a Packer fan had to suffer some abuse at the hands of Bears fans this week, but perhaps the most interesting story came from the twitter person known as “PrideofCucomonga.”  On Tuesday morning he sent out this tweet: “Got to work today and my Bears fan co-worker threw a flag at me. “

Al: Wow, that hurts. But does it hurt as much as Barack Obama knocking the Packers? When addressing some young football fans, Obama used the Packers to show how you can’t be successful if you keep making mistakes. When that was reported by CheeseheadTV, I asked the question, “Another idiot Bears fan? To which Chzheadchick tweeted back, “Never vote Bears fans into public office.”

Jayme: Sounds like a good strategy… Some Packers players chimed in on twitter about the loss to the Bears in various ways, but Nick Barnett was perhaps most pragmatic when he tweeted, “Would have loved to go undefeated but last time I checked, the last team that did that did not win the super bowl…

AL: Good job by Nick putting a positive spin on things. One thing I can’t come up with a positive for is a bit of breaking news revealed just a few hours ago on twitter. Packers Beat writer Greg Bedard is leaving the Journal Sentinel on October 25th. Bedard tweeted, “It is with mixed emotions that I tell you I’m leaving the JS Oct. 25 to become lead NFL writer for The Boston Globe.”

He may have mixed emotions, but this fan doesn’t. He will be sorely missed. For all the wrong reasons…

That folks, was your tweet of the week.

  1. No need to panic? You are exactly right Al. We do, however, need to play the first well executed, mistake free (almost anyway) game of the year. The special teams play must return to the form exhibited earlier. The Packers cannot afford another inconsistent punting effort this year and Crosby better not kick off out-of-bounds again.

The Lion Dline is not a cup cake. They will challange the Oline. Every week the Doc is trying to patch up Clifton and as the season goes on Tauscher becomes more of a question mark. I don’t think anyone thought they’d play all 16. Let’s hope our opinion of Bulaga and TJ was correct. I think it is.

The running game only needs a consistent performer not an all-pro. BJ is not that person. TT wake up before it’s too late.
