Weekly Packers news with a twist, from Al Bracco and Holly Phelps. (As heard on Cheesehead radio. 7/16/10 -7/22/10)

Al: Well, the big news of the week, of course was Johnny Jolly being suspended for at least the 2010 season. The surprising part was that the suspension had nothing to do with his upcoming trial. According to an NFL Network report, Jolly was not suspended for a violation of the personal conduct policy, so the suspension likely is due to failed drug tests. That’s just amazing: failing drug tests while you’re facing felony drug charges. I’m done. It’s time to turn the page on the Jolly Rancher.

Holly: In a bit of good news, another Green Bay Packer draft choice is in the fold. The Packers signed their third round pick, Morgan Burnett to a four-year contract. According to a league source, the deal has a base value of $2.665 million dollars.with a signing bonus of $875,100. A fourth-year escalator can increase the deal’s total value to $3.398 million. When asked what he was going to buy with the signing bonus, Burnett responded, “I really don’t know. I’m just going to try my best to save my money”.  That’s about the best thing I’ve heard all week.

Al: nice to hear someone has some oldtime values. And speaking of oldtime things… The Green Bay Packers announced that they will be wearing their new throwback uniforms on December 5th, a home game against the San Francisco 49ers. The uniforms will be similar to the one worn by the Packers in 1929. The jersey will be navy blue with a gold circle in the middle that includes the player’s number. The pants and helmet will both be khaki colored. Sorry folks, but I think these uniforms look like a bad superhero costume. The only thing missing is a cape.

Holly: No capes!!!  But seriously, the Packers have expressed their interest in hosting the NCAA Big 10 Football Championship game. “We’d be very interested,” said Mark Murphy. “The Big Ten has got such history and tradition, and to have a championship in Lambeau Field would be tremendous. It’d be good for our community and good for college football to have it in such a historic venue.” When asked about the usual preference for enclosed stadiums, Murphy joked, “Early December, that’s balmy in Green Bay.”

Al: That’s t-shirt weather Holly…  In other news, it seems Vikings Coach Brad Childress embarked lest week on his annual summer pilgrimage to the Holy Land in Mississippi. There, he was granted a private audience with the Pope of Quarterbacks. Childress knelt at his feet, kissed his ring and asked for a blessing. The Pope made no promises, but said to watch the house’s chimney for white smoke.

News from the Packers Twitterverse…

AL: I noticed a twitter conversation where some fans were tweeting Vince Lombardi quotes. Of course, his most famous quote got mentioned. “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” Well the problem with that quote is that Vince Lombardi never said it. What he did say was “Winning isn’t everything, but making the effort to win is”. This was explained by Lombardi himself in a book I have called “Vince Lombardi on football.” which was based on a film series Lombardi did for players and coaches called The Science and Art of Football” Whoever first reported that quote decided to change it up a bit to make it sound better. And that’s your Vince Lombardi history lesson for today…

Holly: There was plenty of discussion this week on twitter about the new Madden 11 game and its ratings for Packer players. Even the Packers players themselves chimed in. One person, @tobias80h, needled Nick Barnett about the fact that the game has Desmond Bishop as two points faster than Barnett. Is it true, he asked Barnett? Barnett replied: “Madden has made the biggest mistake about that speed rating !!! That is incredible. I think we should have a linebacker race and see !!!! Not complaining, but I know I am at least in the top two lb speed on my team.”To that, Clay Matthews added, “I’ll trade you my speed for your swag.”

Al: This week marked the return of the Packer’s Lounge dumbass award, and strangely enough, Johhn Jolly was not the target. No, as was discussed by various bloggers on twitter this week, it seems the website Bleacher Report has been hijacking bloggers’ RSS feeds and re-publishing articles on their site. And then denying they had anything to do with it. Two of the bloggers pilfered was our own, Alex Tallitsch and our guest tonight, Brian Carriveau. As Aaron Nagler tweeted, Bleacher Report – Have you no shame?

  1. I had to miss it last night. Later this summer I’ll be tuning in.

I dig the old unis. Remember, they’re only for a game or two anyway. And I suppose this will be viewed as blasphemy, but I’m one of the few who would love to see the Pack throw in some modern alternate uniform for a game or two. How about something with some metallic gold? Maybe some black accents? I mean, they’ve never even tried that for one year like many teams have done, and it would be strictly temporary. Okay, fire away…

      1. How would an alternate be “messing with the Packers’ regular uniforms?” It’s really no different than a throwback for 1 or 2 games. Either way, it’s a temporary thing that goes away in the end. It’s not like I want to go all “Forrest Gregg” and add extra stripes on the arms and bizarre uniform numbers to the pants. Throw it open to a contest for schoolkids or something and pick a modern alternate for a game. Heck, throw it open nationwide to anybody. Just announcing the number of entrants across the world would be PR.

          1. Well, that’s not at all what I am intending. I suppose that, to some extent, any other design featuring a mainly-green jersey (or mainly white) with much smaller portions of the trademark gold would be “messing with the current design,” I am thinking something rather avant garde, definitely “out there” in a modern sense, without getting too weird. That could be impossible, I suppose. But I don’t think at least taking a look at some alternate design would demean the history of the team at all.

Perhaps the alleged Ron Wolf-inspired change that never actually happened?

            1. OK – I mis-understood what you meant. Personally, I’m just not a fan of the alternate jersey concept as a whole. It’s just about making more money in jersey sales…

  2. Concur w/ your comments WRT Jolly (i.e., time to turn the page). I have NFI whether he got busted via P-test or not but it really doesn’t matter because the commish levied his punishment.

  3. Very interesting comments made by Ryan Grant in a phone interview with Garry D. Howard from JSOnline.

  4. Scrubs on bleacher were really stealing content? How ridiculous.
