Cory’s Corner: Saints vs. Colts in Super Bowl XLIX

Forecasting the NFL is tough, but it’s even tougher this year because of the differences between the two leagues.

In the AFC, you’ve got aging Peyton Manning and Tom Brady while in the NFC Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson and Nick Foles still having plenty of seasons in front of them.

Six of last year’s top 10 total offenses were from the NFC — including two in the top three.

With more attention being cast on secondaries for pass interference or holding, intricate and efficient pass offenses will make defenses cry uncle. And as long as Rodgers stays healthy, the Packers remain nearly unbeatable. Even with new center Corey Linsley set to start in place of injured JC Tretter, Rodgers will still outwit and outgun.

Do I go with Manning again after he was exposed in Super Bowl XLVIII? Or do I go with an upstart like Andrew Luck who is in this third year in Indy? Which is the same year that Rodgers won a championship following the 2010 season. And Luck also has Reggie Wayne back and Hakeem Nicks to throw to.

This is the year that Houston regrets not going out and signing a more reliable quarterback than Ryan Fitzpatrick and it’s also the year that Pittsburgh brings some wins back to Steel City.

The Chiefs should challenge the Broncos for the AFC West crown, but Alex Smith will somehow find a way to screw it up. The Bengals have had a mountain of expectations for two years, but Cincinnati fans will remain disgusted following a playoff game.

I really expect the 49ers to take a step backwards mainly because of the off-season drama and the unreliability of Colin Kaepernick as a pocket passer.

Steven Jackson was a huge risk for the Falcons and it won’t get any better this year with a potentially nagging hamstring injury that will impact the passing game.

Drew Brees continues to turn back the hands of Father Time and with one of the softer passing defense schedules, he should have a monster year. He’s got the best tight end in Jimmy Graham and the speedy Brandin Cooks will get plenty of chances to show off on the Mercedes-Benz Superdome carpet.

The Bears have the best offensive weapons in the NFC with Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and Martellus Bennett. Yet, Jay Cutler will implode when it matters most.

So here are my 2014 NFL picks:

  1. Cory – this is why Thursday night’s is important. Even though it’s only the first game of the season, I believe if the Packers beat Seattle and stay healthy they can gain the #1 seed in the NFC and defeat the Saints at home and go on to win the SB over the Colts. Also, in the AFC I believe that either KC or SD will earn a wild card over the Bills. Beyond that your predictions are looking good. Of course they are only predictions and anything can happen during the NFL season. Only one game matters for now, Packers vs. SeaHawks. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ’61

    1. Since 61 – Even if GB loses at both SEA and NO, they could very well still get the #1 seed. Our most important weeks are 3,4,5. @DET @CHI and MIN at home on a short week. The NFCN will be 80% decided already if the Pack wins all 3 of those.

      PS – Corey I don’t buy the Colts. On offense or defense. The only thing they have going for them is the fact that their entire conference blows goats. The AFC will put a sacrificial lamb of NE or DEN up against the NFC champ (either NO, SEA, GB, SF, or PHI)

      1. I think Denver is probably a legit contender.

        I agree that the Colts are iffy. Not sure why everyone is quite so high on them.

        Wouldn’t be surprised if SF took a step backwards this year either. They dealt with a lot of crap this offseason, esp on defense.

      2. 4-1 after 5 games would have us sitting pretty except that we would probably have to go to SEA for the NFC Championship game.

        1. I’m thinking we will be doing good to be 3-2 after first 5. Then we get Tretter and Bostick back. We play Philly, NOR and Pats after that. And our division a 2nd time. Very challenging schedule. Assuming AROD stays healthy I see anything from 14-2 to 7-9. That averages out to 10.5. What’s the o/u for the Pack? Probably 11.

  2. Everything this off-season points to Patriots back on top, so I don’t see anything that supports them falling to Colts. Both teams have soft divisions, though NE does have more competition this year. Nothing shows me that Seahawks aren’t still the dominant team, but GB and NO are right in the mix. I think GB and Sawks meet again in post season.

  5. All the usual suspects again in the conversation. I guess they are the topic of discussion for a reason. Beyond that, its so hard to predict the winner of the superbowl this soon, luckily the playoffs are down the road. Like every year, staying relaively healthy and keeping your key guys on the field make all the difference. Not that I’m a homer, but this point, the pack is as good a pick as anyone, so they’re mine. I feel better that way. Let the fun begin. Go Pack go!

  8. Colts defense looked horrible in preseason! It will come down to late season record and who can remain healthy. The Bear’s defense looked horrible in ps. If we can win tomorrow, stay healthy, and get the #1 seed… no way we lose to a dome team at Lambeau! I’m actually more concerned about the Eagles than any of the NFC dome team contenders. Go Pack!

  9. The Colts also have a huge question mark at running back, which I think is going to cause them problems in the later stages of the season, if/when they make their playoff push…
