Family Night First Impressions: Mama Mia Mason Crosby

Mason Crosby sure knows how to leave a bad taste in your mouth, doesn’t he? After a fun Family Night Scrimmage for both the fans and players, one that should have left everyone feeling good, instead, there are worries.

Overall on the night, Crosby missed five of eight field goal attempts. Two of his makes weren’t by much, either. Oy vay…

Giorgio Tavecchio made six of seven attempts. I wouldn’t exactly say he was impressive, but tonight he was better and he did make a 51 yard attempt. It’s good to know he’s capable of that distance, anyway.

Eddie Lacy looked like the real deal – he can make yardage when there’s little there to be made. And when he gets in the clear – he’s faster than you’d expect.

Johnathan Franklin seems to prefer (or need) open space to operate in. Looked best catching the ball out of the backfield. Did not show much running between the tackles.

The team’s best kickoff kicker could very well be Tim Masthay. This would help Tavecchio immensely if the Packers would seriously consider keeping him but concerned about kickoffs.

AJ Hawk – who is that skinny guy? Hawk has obviously slimmed down (or did some serious fat to lean muscle conversion) and appeared much more mobile. He was very active .

Davis Baktiari got a lot of looks at right tackle. Had my eye on him. Mostly went up against Nick Perry and I’d say Baktiari did his job. No real pressure from Perry.

Johnny Jolly was in on a few stops and seemed to be moving well (although he seemed a bit out of breath towards the end).  Thought he had a good night.

Jeremy Ross is my return guy (especially kickoffs). I’ve liked him from the first time he returned a kick last year. He has the right mentality; makes a quick decision, picks a seam and just goes.  I like him better than Cobb, actually.

BJ Coleman still has issues with touch. His strong arm is a detriment at times- hasn’t learned when a pass needs more loft than force.

The stadium addition looks awesome, as does the scoreboard atop. Noise level seemed louder. I think the plan to build a wall of sound will prove to have worked.

  1. Yeah, Hawk got pretty good air, for . . . well, Hawk, on the pass he batted down. I thought Datone Jones looked pretty disruptive, Perry looked much improved, and Hyde was everywhere. Nixon’s pick showed awareness. All the receivers looked very well coached, knew when to set down, return to QB.

  2. We know Crosby’s upside: somewhere on the bottom half of the NFL’s kickers. Journeyman kickers like Olindo Mare are generally better. And if a journeyman kicker can do better, there’s little risk in cutting Crosby. Crosby’s had his shot. Time to see what someone else can do.

  3. Well, what is there to say about Crosby? He looked horrible. He was even short on the kick-offs. Second bad Family Night for him. For a veteran, he looked dazed and confused out there.

I know a lot of people are pulling for Coleman, but I thought Harrell looked better. At least he doesn’t throw it to the receiver when the DB is standing right in front of him. His arm strength was good enough.

Considering the playing time Bakh got tonight it appears the staff wants a good look at him. The RT spot might not be as settled as we think.

  4. Couldn’t watch it – don’t like hearing about Crosby. I feel for the guy, but a professional has got to do his job consistently. NOT just when it mentally/physically feels good. It’s time to move on.

Was Bakhtiari (sp?) looking good, or has Perry just not improved? How did Newhouse look?

    1. Parry looked solid, if unspectacular – which is what I think we’ll see from Perry. Bak did a nice job staying in front of Perry and absorbing his bull rush.

      1. Al, if I understand it correctly, when rushing the passer Perry’s main duty is to push the lineman back into the QB, so he has no where to escape from and steps up into the pressure, is that correct?

        1. Holding the edge is certainly a big part of his responsibilities, but that doesn’t mean the Packers wouldn’t want him tallying sacks on his own. He will be infinitely better at holding the edge than Walden was – he’s a strong dude.

  5. Agree that Ross could/should be a solid returner (if he hangs on to the ball) but seems limited as a receiver. Routes still seem shaky–anyone else notice that last night?

    1. That’s the only issue. Brought this up last week on CheeseheadRadio. It’s why they have been trying multiple guys at returner and why McCarthy recently said Cobb is still the guy for now. Doubtful if Ross is in the top 5 or 6 of receivers they have in camp. And they’re not likely to keep a guy solely as a returner.

      1. This would tend to indicate otherwise in regards to Ross…

“Ross shouldn’t just be viewed as a returner. He, too, has benefitted from both of Green Bay’s seventh-round pick receivers (Johnson and Dorsey) being out. In the two-minute drill that closed out practice, Ross caught two passes from Rodgers for first downs.

“I think Jarrett and Jeremy are both definitely guys you say, second year you can say, ‘Hey, look at this young man right here, the improvement he’s made from Year 1 to Year 2,'” coach Mike McCarthy said this week. “They know everything. They’re comfortable with what they’re being asked to do. You can see the relationship, the connection they’re having with the quarterback. That’s a huge indicator as far as timing on routes and interpretation of things and adjustments, particularly for the number of things we do at the line of scrimmage.”

Seems others think Ross has a legit chance at being a WR. Maybe not there yet, but getting better. Driver did next to nothing his 1st 3 years. If Ross proves to be a legit returner, he’ll only get better at WR.
