Packer News 5/18/11 – 5/25/11

Al: Well, there is just soooo much Packers news, I don’t even know where to start. OK, that’s not really true, is it? Thanks to the owners’ lockout, the Packers training facilities must be eerily quiet. No sounds of weights clanging, coaches blowing whistles or fans pleadings for autograph. I’m sure the people of Green Bay, players, coaches and team employees are all a bit confused trying to figure out what to do in the absence of normal football activities.

Jayme:    Speaking of confusion, there was a bit of confusion this week over whether the Packers had cut the salaries of their assistant coaches. In Sunday’s Boston Globe, former Packers writer Greg Bedard wrote that according to the NFL Coaches Association (NFLCA), the Packers had cut their salaries by 20-25%. But then, in a Tuesday Globe article, Bedard wrote that the Director of the NFLCA had called to retract his statements as inaccurate and apologized to Bedard’s readers and to the Packers.

Al: The Packers organization announced four events scheduled to take place this summer in Green Bay. The Annual Shareholders meeting will take place on Thursday July 28, followed by the Jerry Parins Cruise for Cancer on July 29th, and the Lambeau Field 5K run on the 30th. All will take place rain or shine, new CBA or not. The fourth event is the Annual Family night Scrimmage, which will take place Saturday August 6th, weather permitting and and only if a new CBA is in place.

Jayme:  And until there is a new CBA, there is no free agency and Packers players like Cullen Jenkins, Brandon Jackson, James Jones and John Kuhn have no idea what the future holds for them. They don’t know what the Packers plans are for them, nor can they gauge possible interest from other teams. Will the same free agency rules even apply? They don’t know – and they’re stuck in CBA limbo.

Al:  While the recent draftees are also in their own limbo, we know of at least one that has been very active in doing everything he can to be ready whenever football does resume. That player would be Randall Cobb. Cobb has been making the rounds lately, meeting up with Aaron Rodgers at the Kentucky Derby, fielding punts from Tim Masthay and now working out with a group of current NFL players in Arizona – a group that will soon include Greg Jennings. Cobb is aware of how the lockout will hurt his chances of being an immediate contributor at wide receiver, but in an exclusive interview with Packer Report, Cobb thinks he has an advantage over other rookie wide receivers – his experience playing quarterback. As Cobb told Packer Report, “It gives you a great understanding of when you should come open and how much time you have for your routes.”

Jayme:   Clay Matthews had a little fun this week at the expense of Buffalo Bills fans, who supposedly love to lament what might have been if their team had taken Clay Matthews instead of Aaron Maybin. Of course what really would have happened is that Clay would not have a Super Bowl ring. Matthews was in upstate NY receiving the Coca Cola Sportsman of the year award. Matthews was talking about the Packers and how he got to win a Super Bowl when he added “You guys got Aaron Maybin, so go ahead and enjoy that.”  Zing….

Al : .. Those were your top news stories for the week, and Cheesehead Radio now brings you “News from the Packers Twitterverse…”

[Sound File: Twitterverse]

Jayme: Of course, this past weekend was the Rapture weekend, which everyone had a little fun with, including the Packers Super Bowl MVP.  “If the world was gonna end I would watch the Princess Bride one more time,” tweeted Rodgers. “ So just in case I think I will.”

Al: Our friend Max Ginsberg of Purple Pants Green Jersey had this comment on the lockout. “The NFL lockout needs to end. If for no other reason than stopping every sportswriter and blogger from posting more Top 10 lists.”  Guilty as charged, Max…

Jayme: The lockout prompted another bored Packers player to join the ranks of twitter. “I was just delaying the inevitable, tweeted Daryn Colledge. “Twitter I am home! I’ll try and keep up with these other #twitterphenoms.” If you want to follow Daryn, his twitter handle is @DarynColledge73. Al: And finally, all this sitting around and waiting and speculating has put at least one Packer player in a bit of an ornery mood. Nick Barnett, responding to all the love for Desmond Bishop, pulled no punches when he tweeted, “Can i ask a question…I mean no disrespect to anyone…How can you say someone “WON” a starting spot when someone was hurt?” Obviously Nick is feeling a bit insecure and once again, decided to bare his soul on twitter. And for that, we select this as the

  1. Why is Tom Crabtree even mentioned, all I see is
questions from Jayme and answers from Al.

    1. Um, the second sentence tells you how to hear the interview and the rest are NOT questions/answers. Why comment if you’re not even reading?
