Green Bay Packers Superfans and Their Stories: Adam Czech

ALLGBP.com All Green Bay Packers All the Time

From time to time, I plan to bring you stories about some special Green Bay Packers fans and how their lives have been affected by their love of the Green and Gold.  I’ve always been fascinated by people’s personal Packers stories. Special moments, Packer memories, childhood influences, they can be anything, as long as the Green Bay Packers are a big part of it.

The other day, I happened to mention on twitter that I had been to a wedding reception where the bride and groom were introduced to the FOX NFL Football theme. I thought that was pretty cool until Adam Czech tweeted me back about his own experience.  I encouraged him to write about it in more detail, and here it is…

Adam Czech:

You know those E-Harmony commercials on TV? Where the man and the woman stare lovingingly into each other’s eyes while explaining how E-Harmony helped them find their ideal mate? My wife and I would be perfect for one of those spots.

Problem is, I don’t think the folks at E-Harmony would go for my commercial. Instead of staring lovingly, I would open the commercial with video of my wife and I at our wedding reception. The spot would start by showing us being introduced to “Bang the Drum all Day” blaring over the PA system. I would follow with clips from our wedding recdeption, where guests had to chant Go Pack Go! if they wanted us to kiss.

The commercial would continue with the first part of our honeymoon, where we watched Brett Favre and the Vikings beat the Packers at the Metrodome two days after the wedding. This would be followed by a wide-shot of my depressed wife and I leaving the Dome in a sea of unwashed and drooling purple people. The camera would cut to us talking about how, without our love for each other, we both may have jumped off of a tall building that night.

The commercial would continue with me talking about how perfect my life has been since I met my wife, while showing us walking down the beaches of Puerto Vallerta, Mexico, the location of our second (and much happier) honeymoon.

The ending would show our Packers moments together: Our first game together at Lambeau; the snow-globe playoff win over Seattle; beating the Colts during an otherwise forgettable 2008 season; In Minnesota, video of us celebrating the Saints playoff win over the Vikings.

Before reading further, please understand that my wife and I are not one of those annoying sports-crazed couples. I didn’t propose on the big screen at a stadium. I didn’t wear a Reggie White jersey down the aisle. Our head table at the reception wasn’t decorated with foam cheeseheads from a gas station in Tomah, Wis.

However, I’m not ashamed to say that the Packers have played a role in bringing my wife and I closer together. I knew my wife was “the one” during the snow-globe game. You know how there are an overwhelming amount of emotions and feelings that you go through when you’re in love? You know all of those emotions add up to love, but there’s always doubt in the back of your mind about whether those emotions mean that the person you are in love with is “the one.” Then, all of the sudden, something clicks and that doubt disappears.

During the snow-globe game,I looked at my wife as the snow started falling and the Packers were driving for the go-ahead touchdown. She was more excited than I was. I’m not sure why I didn’t drop to one knee and propose right there. It wasn’t the fact that the Packers were making a furious comeback that made me realize she was “the one.” It was knowing that if I was experiencing this moment with anybody else besides her, it wouldn’t be nearly as memorable.

For most fans at Lambeau that day, it was Brett Favre and Ryan Grant providing the memories. For me, it was my wife.

I married my wife, Julianna, on Oct. 3, 2009, in St. Paul, Minn. During the wedding planning process, we never planned to have any sort of Packers theme, it just sort of happened here and there. I made a tongue-in-cheek suggestion that we get introduced at the reception to “Bang the Drum all Day.” The more we thought about it, the better it sounded.

It was an upbeat song, it was unique, and the Wisconsin guests from my wife’s side would love it. We didn’t care that the guests on my side (I’m from Minnesota and so is most of my family) wouldn’t understand the song’s meaning. That’s their own fault for listening to a blaring horn mixed with fake crowd noise in an inflatable dome for the past 30 years.

We didn’t want to hear clanking glasses every time guests wanted us to kiss during dinner. Instead, we asked guests to get together in a Go Pack Go! chant every time they wanted us to smooch. It went over fairly well, although it has to be the only time in wedding-kiss history that you could hear scattered boos throughout the hall while the newlyweds made out.

For the most part, the Minnesotans and Wisconsinites got along fine throughout the evening, but there were a couple of incidents. My cousin, a cop in Minneapolis, drew a Vikings logo on a napkin and propped it up at the center of the head table during dinner. Unfortunately, a few photos were taken of this travesty before we were able to destroy the napkin and clean the area of the table where it had touched.

A few guests also thought it would be funny to sign our wedding picture frame with pro-Vikings messages. Much to my dismay, I was not able to identify these guests and have them thrown out.

As the night continued, and guests from both states continued enjoying the free beer, one of my wife’s friends asked me if it would be alright if he changed out of his shirt and tie and into his Aaron Rodgers jersey. After making it clear toto Pa him that he should never feel that he has to ask me for permission to change inckers gear, he returned in his No. 12 jersey. I was pleased.

As you can see, the Packers were a part of our wedding day much like they’ve been a part of our relationship. Some of our favorite memories together revolve around the Packers. Our wedding was no different. I feel like I need to end this piece by expressing how I feel about my wife in the most heartfelt and genuine way possible. That’s impossible to do in words, but I came close with the vows I read to her on our wedding day. Of course, the Packers also were included:

Julianna: You are my best friend and the most genuine person I have ever known.
I promise to love you more and more each and every day, for the rest of our lives.
You have changed my entire outlook on life and helped me become a more complete person.
I thank God for blessing me with you in my life
.
I promise to cherish you and never take you for granted.
I know that from this day forward, our love will grow stronger each and every day

I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you,
to look into your eyes every morning,
welcome you home from work every day
and never miss another Packers game on Sunday
I love you, Julianna, and I promise that I always will.

Great story, Adam. Don’t be surprised if someone steals it and makes it into a Lifetime movie…   You can see more of Adam’s writing on Packerchatters.com.

  1. That is a great story. I was also dating a sports fan woman (from my soccer team, not the Packers). She was also very fannatic, like me. It didn’t work out, though, but was great while it lasted.

Hope you and your wife have all the happiness in the world, Adam! And thank you for bringing this to us, Al!

  2. Well, my wife is a Cowboy fan and when the Pack and Boys play, we watch it in different rooms. But will be married for 36 years on Aug 3rd, so you can see we can work those minor problems out. Threw the years she has turned into a Packer fan, unless the ‘Boys are playing.

    1. Haha. I know plenty of people in similar situations.

She roots for the Packers, but I’ll bet you don’t root for the Cowboys. Am I right?
