Packers News 7/9 – 7/15

This past week, 126 lucky people got a phone call they’ve been waiting for a long time. No, they didn’t win the Powerball lottery, but they did score season tickets to the Green Bay Packers. Of course now they’ll have to shell out the cost for a personal seat license as well as pay for the tickets.  Green Bay is still a relative bargain though, as PSLs range from $600 – $1400 per ticket. That’s a fraction of what Jets and Giants PSLs run. Just for the heck of it, I sent in my own season ticket request letter this week. That’s only about 84,000 other people in front of me.

Here’s a story about how the blogosphere has grown, get this — Cheesehead TV managed to scoop the National Media this past week. Brian McIntyre, who writes the Other 31 Blog over at Cheesehead TV, broke the news days before anyone else that the Packers had signed 5th round draft pick Andrew Quarless. Quarless was signed to a 4-year deal worth a maximum of 2.7 million dollars with a $182,000 signing bonus.

The subject of rookie signing bonuses was recently talked about by Jack Bechta of the National Football Post. Bechta says that many NFL GMs wait as long as possible before signing their draft choices. The GMs are worried that the money will get put toward partying and the rookies will slack off on their workouts. One GM said to Bechta that “he likes keeping the rookies poor and hungry until camp.”

Speaking of the National Football Post, Andrew Brandt, former Packers Vice President, wrote this week about how it took a perfect storm for Charles Woodson to end up in Green Bay. While we all probably know that story, Brandt revealed some other interesting information about that 2006 off-season. Seems the Packers were also hot on two-time All-Pro linebacker LaVar Arrington. Arrington turned down more money from the Packers to play for the Giants, just so he could play against the Redskins twice a year. Unfortunately for him, Arrington ruptured his Achilles in week 7 of that year, and would never play another down in the NFL.

(Giants signed him for $49 million over 7 years, he was released the following Feb…)

Well, the Packer’s Al Harris is someone who hopes to play a lot more downs in the NFL, but this week, he announced that he is now a music Producer. He has teamed up with a lifelong troubled friend that did jail time but turned his life around with the help of religion. The company is called 31 Entertainment and will produce Christian Rap music with an aim to show kids it’s cool to be into religion. Some music has already been recorded and if you’ve watched any of Harris’s rehab videos you’ve heard one of the songs as the music bed. As the song says, stay tuned, the proof is coming soon.

I’ve got one more story for you. In news that will be spliced by league and labor alike, the Packers released their financial information yesterday. While they reported record revenues and are still in the black, operating profit fell just over 50% from the last year.  Over  the last four years, Packers’ revenues have grown 5.5 percent annually, while player costs have increased 11.8 percent annually, or more than double the rate of revenue growth. So, anyone out there still wondering why Ted Thompson and the Packers have ignored expensive free agents lately?

News from the Packers twitterverse:

During Sunday’s World Cup Soccer game, at least one Packer player was really into the game. That turned out to be my new twitter best friend, Atari Bigby. Atari’s Packers.com bio says that soccer is his first love,  so I asked him if he was a soccer player that got recruited by the football coach. Atari answered that he was always football first. I mentioned that his bio also says he earned a letter in soccer, two in track and three in football. Atari couldn’t help a little bit of bragging, he  tweeted back a simple “athlete of the year”.

Well, another personality on defense, Desmond Bishop, got into a heated exchange on Twitter recently with Chris Lempesis, tonight’s guest blogger. Seems people had been tweeting a bunch of Chuck Norris-like jokes about amazing things Bishop can supposedly do. Chris sent a tweet to Bishop that said: “One thing @Desbishop55 can’t do: Get on the field.”  Bishop responded with some profanity, including an F-bomb, and vowed to make Chris eat his words.  I don’t know what precipitated this exchange, but you can be sure we’ll ask Chris later, so stay tuned for that.

If you follow Packer rookies Mike Neal and CJ Wilson on twitter, you can’t help but be impressed. Always talking about faith, family, football and Packers Pride. So I sent out a tweet that said I REALLY hoped BOTH of these guys make the team. A few seconds later, Jason Wilde, of ESPN Milwaukee tweeted back, “With help from Johnny Jolly, I think they both will.” That’s a great job by Jason, there…

But that wasn’t the funniest or even the best tweet this week. No, that distinction goes to someone with the twitter name of PackerLady12. As Spain won the World cup final and their joyous fans celebrated the victory, PackerLady12 tweeted: “Hey #Vikings..see the Spaniards all jumping around? That’s what it’s like to win a Championship. “

Yes folks, THAT was the Packers’ Tweet of the Week.

  1. ALERT!!!! From NFL: Johnnie Jolly has ben suspended indefinetely. TT issued a statement saying, (paraphrased)”Jolly a guy who loved the game and yada yada, yada.

    1. Well, looks like my scenario of Jolly being gone and going with both DL draft choice is going to happen, but not how I envisioned.
