Today is Labor Day. It’s a day that honors the workers that helped make this country great. It’s also a day with an un-related tradition, the MDA Telethon, now in it’s 48th year (and now broadcasting on Sunday).
The MDA’s mission is simple; to save and improve lives for those battling this debilitating neuromuscular disease. As with any search for a cure, funding is a critical aspect.
As the telethon approaches, organizations and private citizens work on raising funds beforehand to be donated during the telethon to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
One such event was held this past August 14th, at the Keva Sports Center in Middleton, WI. That night, the MDA of Southern Wisconsin held their 2nd annual MDA Madison Muscle Team Event.
The event, sponsored by Citgo, Morgan Stanley and Bachmann Construction includes a cocktail reception, silent auction, food stations, entertainment and photo opportunities with local, state and national athletes. The former Packers players in attendance were Antonio Freeman, Ahman Green and William Henderson.
“It’s a high energy fundraiser that pairs each top athlete with an MDA Buddy, a local child living with a neuromuscular disease, to provide an unforgettable evening,” according to Greg Smithback, vice president of business development at Bachmann Construction and volunteer chair of the Madison event.
Silent and live auctions featured unique sports memorabilia, one of a kind travel opportunities, and local artwork. Guests were able to meet-and-greet athletes, coaches, MDA Buddies, local celebrities and business executives while raising money to support the fight against muscle disease.
Former Packers Green and Henderson came to the event via Mayfield Sports Marketing, located in Oconomowoc, WI. Owner Mark Mayfield commented, “On behalf of William and Ahman, it was our pleasure to be invited to such an awesome community event. Thanks you to Greg, Jim, Keith and the entire MDA team, who worked extremely hard to put on the 2nd Annual MDA Madison Muscle Team Event.”
