CheeseheadRadio News 09-20-12

Al: Well, Packer Nation took a collective sigh of relief seven days ago, as the Green Bay defense rose from the ashes of their first game disappointment and put a beating on Jay Cutler and the Bears. Youth was served as Dom Capers ramped up the playing time for Packers rookies and he was duly rewarded with an exuberant performance from the rookies and the defense, in particular.

Jayme:  Speaking of resurgences, the Packers offense, while still not fully clicking, found a running game against the Bears. Starting running back  Cedric Benson returned the benefits the Packers had hoped for when they signed him, rushing for 81 yards in 20 attempts and catching 4 passes for another 35 yards. In addition to those stats, Benson had one more important one – no fumbles.

Al:  The Packers had some fun in the media after this game, especially Charles Woodson, who had plenty to say about Jay Cutler and his “Good Luck” comments. Woodson said the Packers had a good laugh in the Locker room about Cutler’s comments, and then went on to say, “We don’t need Luck, Jay will throw us the ball.” And he did – four times…

Jayme:   Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, but that wasn’t necessary for Packers punter Tim Masthay. As he has done in their last few meetings, Masthay neutralized the dangerous Devin Hester with some high, long and well-placed punts. Masthay was recognized for his efforts by being named the NFC Special teams player of the week.

Al:  As the Packers prepare for the Seahawks, they were seemingly getting healthier by the minute. I’m sure the 10 days between games was a big help, as both Greg Jennings and James Starks were back participating in a fully padded practice on Tuesday. Jennings, however,  was held out of practice today and coach Mike McCarthy said the injury is not healing as quickly as they had hoped.

Jayme: Oh, and there was another bogus Finley internet firestorm this week – and that’s all we’re going to say about it…

Those were your Packers news stories for the week. Cheesehead Radio now brings you …:

“Gems from the Packers Twitterverse…”

Jayme:  There was sad news in the NFL community this week, with the passing of Steve Sabol, who with his father formed the now-iconic NFL Films. Melissa Jacobs, otherwise known as @TheFootballGirl, tweeted, “Without Sabol, we wouldn’t be here writing or tweeting about the NFL with the same passion. He made the game far more interesting.”

Al:  Also interesting is this tweet from our guest tonight, Brian Nemhauser, known as @hawkblogger on twitter. I don’t know if he was just trying to butter us up, but he had this to say, “I want the Hawks to beat the Packers in a bad way, but I have no hate for Packers fans. Always been classy when I’ve met them”

Jayme: The always fun fake twitter account called @NotVicKetchman had this to say about next weekend” “Trying to get me a featured spot at that Throwup Weekend deal.”

Al: And finally, a real Packers employee, namely Eliot Wolf, the Packers Director of Pro Personnel, had this to say about Calais Campbell beating out Clay Matthews for NFC Defensive player of the week, “If Clay had gotten 1.5 less sacks, he might have been able to win player of the week!”

Nice burn there, Eliot and for that you are awarded the…

  1. Why does the media hate on Matthews so much? He is a great classy player. He gets held on every play with no calls ever and is still more effective than most. Stop the hate liberal media…
