Packers make room for LB Walden, cut CB Ross

As the Packers turn the page on Erik Walden’s one-game suspension, they’ve cut cornerback Brandian Ross to clear room for the 27 year-old linebacker.

Ross was inactive for Sunday’s game against the 49ers, but the Packers will likely try and keep him around to the practice squad. Teams have 24 hours to put in a claim for Ross before he’s eligible for the Packers to bring him back.

Walden will provide depth to the outside linebacker position behind starters Clay Matthews and Nick Perry. Matthews was one of just a few bright spots on Sunday, racking up 2.5 sacks–nearly half of last season’s total of six.

Ross was a surprise inclusion on the 53-man roster, so it makes sense that he’s been released to free up a roster spot for Walden.

While it remains highly unlikely that Walden will solve all of the Packers problems defensively, his return will be a welcome addition to the team craving a win over the Chicago Bears on Thursday. The best game of Walden’s career came against the Bears in the regular season finale of the 2010 season, recording 12 total tackles and sacking Jay Cutler three times.

  1. The Prison Warden is back baby!

Walden about to keep that left edge on lockdown.

Perry may be a great player but I really hope the coaches realize that he’s a liability in coverage and at the very least, split reps with Walden and Moses.

Gotta put the best player on the field, gents.

  2. Thursdays game will be interesting. The bears might have a better O then the 9ers. If Cutler has time, and now that he has a few weapons, I think he’s prob a better QB then Smith. This is not a good thing for our confused secondary. Hopefully the bears O-line sucks like I think they do, other wise we will need to win a shoot out. The good news is the bears are not as good as the 9ers on D. But, they can create pressure with 4 and cover with 7, and they will be fired up for the packers. This will be a tuff game for the Pack. I hope Capers and his D gets thier sh$t together for this one.

  3. Did anyone else ever think they would see the day when Packer Nation would be thrilled to see Walden back?? Looks like a wasted pick on cement shoes Perry. Perry plays as nervous as a whore in church on Sunday.

  4. People need to give it a rest on Perry. Give him some time, its been ONE game. Plus hes switching from defensive end in college. Matthews didn’t even come along till about halfway through his first year

  5. Walden is the Bear killer…he must play
    this Thursday night.
    Just because Capers likes a 3-4 doesn’t
mean he can’t play a 4-3 once in a while.
Use Perry as a DE (his natural position)
in this package…with Raj Pick & Worthy.
This would surely raise some hell with
    the opponents o-line!

    1. There was a lot of speculation that the Packers were planning such a package with the draft picks and DL signings, but so far, we haven’t seen any…
