News & Notes:

Won two straight USA Today high school National Championships while at Lakeland (Fl.) High School…Played in four games his freshman season but received a medical hardship waiver after hurting his shoulder…Ran for 682 yards and four scores during his redshirt-freshman year, earning SEC All-Freshman honors…Finished his college career with 2,393 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, plus 66 catches for 764 yards and six more scores…Returned 25 punts and 18 kickoffs…Lost seven fumbles during his four years…Was charged with aggravated stalking in 2010 after sending his ex-girlfriend a threatening text message, later suspended by the school…Those charges were dropped when he completed a program of community service and anger management…Has experience playing running back, receiver and special teams…He’s been one of the nation’s most productive punt blockers over the last four years, as his six blocked punts set a SEC record…Struggles blocking out of the backfield but has a solid, compact frame…Most compare him to Percy Harvin, his former teammate at Florida and current Minnesota Viking…If used right at the next level, could have Darren Sproles like impact…Given his versatility and rare athleticism, the Packers could realistically afford to use a roster spot on him as another Swiss Army knife type player.

What they’re saying about him:

CBS Sports: “Perhaps the most explosive cutting ability and straight-line speed of any athlete in the 2012 draft. Can make defenders look silly due to his lateral agility and sudden acceleration. Versatile. Saw time as a running back, receiver, punt returner and kick returner for the Gators … Looks natural catching the ball out of the backfield and has shown the ability to track the ball over his shoulder and snatch passes outside of his frame …”

National Football Post (Wes Bunting): “He’s a narrow framed athlete, but has natural running ability, keeps his pad level down and can consistently make defenders miss. Needs to add girth to give himself a chance. But if he can get up to around 190-pounds and add some strength, he certainly looks like a potential change of pace back/slot guy who can fill a number of roles at the next level.”

NFL Combine: “…his track-speed translates to the football field, which makes him an intriguing prospect who has played various roles within Florida’s offense. While not nearly as big as former teammate Percy Harvin, Rainey has been able to deliver for the Gators in a similar fashion. He uses his supreme agility and foot quickness to make guys miss and make an electric play whenever he touches the ball. He could move up into the middle rounds by April if he continues to display his athletic ability in the coming months.”

Video Analysis:

  • Tougher than his frame/size suggests
  • Breath-taking with the football in his hands, even in the physically and athletically dominant SEC
  • Speed doesn’t always translate to the next level, but his will. He’ll be one of the NFL’s fastest players the second he’s drafted
  • What Houdini was to chains, handcuffs and straitjackets, Rainey is to tacklers
  • A blur in the open field
  • Lateral agility that is rivaled by very few in college football or the NFL
  • Low to the ground and choppy because of size, but needs more weight to withstand NFL punishment
  • Hard not to see both Percy Harvin and Darren Sproles in his game

  1. This guy and LaMicheal James seem the same to me. Worth a look in round 4 or after.

I think a lot of our interest in these types of players depends on how Alex Green in recovering from the ACL. IMO Grant comes back. Between Grant/Starks/Green/Saine we should be just fine a RB for the forseeable future. Making Rainey/James a luxury pick.

Someone else will grab these guys first, because they can do great things.

  2. You couldn’t find a highlight clip with a more kid friendly song???? I like the idea of Rainey being a scat back for us though.

  3. I live in FL. What the scouting report doesnt say is he is also a world class hoodlum. He threatened to kill his girlfriend and was kicked off the team for a period time. Cobb can do anything he can do only better.

    1. You have to give an objective analysis regardless of if you don’t like what he’s done off the field so I have to say this guy is faster than Cobb, probably speed on par with sproles. Other than that I think Cobb makes as good cuts as him and is as quick and I agree he’s not worth drafting… I don’t think that a person who threatens to kill people is really the type of person TT would bring into his organization.

  4. I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% sure. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Appreciate it

  5. I like the scouting reports but this is strictly a day 3 guy. You are spot on most of time. Erik Walden Act II is not something I want to see.

  6. Greetings! Quick question that’s completely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My weblog looks weird when viewing from my iphone. I’m trying to discover a template or plugin that might be able to fix this difficulty. In the event you have any recommendations, please share. Appreciate it!

  7. I have to point out my appreciation for your kindness for people that really need guidance on your area. Your special dedication to passing the solution all-around had become extraordinarily interesting and have continuously permitted girls much like me to achieve their desired goals. The informative help and advice entails a lot a person like me and far more to my mates. With thanks; from each one of us.
