Evan Dietrich-Smith: 2011 Green Bay Packers Evaluation and Report Card

Packers Offensive Lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith
Evan Dietrich-Smith

1) Introduction: Evan Dietrich-Smith has the good fortune of owning a Super Bowl ring. After being cut in the 2010 preseason, the Packers re-signed him in late December of that year to replace the IR’d Marshall Newhouse on the roster. Smith got the pleasure of watching his teammates win the Super Bowl. To the surprise of some, Smith made the roster in 2011 as the primary backup at center and guard.

2) Profile:

Evan Blake Dietrich-Smith

Position: OT
Height: 6-2
Weight: 308 lbs.
AGE: 25

Career Stats:

3) Expectations coming into the season: Frankly, after tagging along for the Super Bowl ride on the bench, Smith was expected to lose his battle with Nick McDonald as the Packers’ backup center. Why would the Packers have used a roster spot on McDonald the entire 2010 season, if they didn’t have future plans for him? Dietrich-Smith persevered, however, and McDonald was waived.

4) Player’s highlights/low-lights: His season high point had to be getting Ndamukong Suh so pissed that he stomped on Dietrich-Smith and got ejected from the game.  The lowlight had to be in Kansas City, entering the game when Derrick Sherrod broke his leg and promptly giving up a sack on third down two plays later.

5) Player’s contribution to the overall team success: Dietrich-Smith appeared in 8 games this season, with three starts. In his limited action, Smith gave up 4 sacks, second most on the team. He was also called for 5 penalties.

6) Player’s contributions in the playoffs: None. He was active on game day, but I can’t find any indication that he played at all.

Season Report Card:

(C+) Level of expectations met during the season
(D) Contributions to team’s overall success.
(D-) Contributions to team during the playoffs

Overall Grade: D

  1. D sounds about right. I think at the end of the season he was playing a little better than I thought he could. The first couple of games he was weak but he did show some progress as he played more.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him around next year for C/G backup. Although, I’d like to see if GB could get Peter Konz (UW) to play that role. Not sure if TT would go that high for an Olineman again. Too many Defensive issues.

  2. Jersey Al, typo?

“5) Player’s contribution to the overall team success: NEWHOUSE appeared in 8 games this season, with three starts.”

    1. I don’t think I was complaining, but the performance was not that hot in his limited action. Second-most sacks on the team in the limited time he played? Just a body… but of course, you need bodies you can plug in when multiple injuries hit.

  3. “His season high point had to be getting Ndamukong Suh so pissed that he stomped on Dietrich-Smith and got ejected from the game.” -Jersey Al

LOL! I think I laughed for like 3min when I read that.
