Brad Jones: 2011 Green Bay Packers Evaluation and Report Card

Packers outside linebacker Brad Jones
Brad Jones

1) Introduction: The forgotten man in the outside linebacker corps, many people forgot that Jones filled in admirably for Aaron Kampman after he was placed on IR in 2009.  Unfortunately, Jones himself was placed on IR during the 2010 season and was promptly forgotten.  Jones slowly worked his way back into the rotation due to his availability and good special teams play.

2) Profile:

Brandon Edward Jones

Position: OLB
Height: 6-3
Weight: 242 lbs.
AGE: 25
Career Stats

3) Expectations coming into the season for that player: Very low: After getting passed by Frank Zombo and Erik Walden during the 2010 season after being placed on IR, Jones was on the outside looking in at outside linebacker and there was some talk of converting him to inside linebacker when Nick Barnett and Brandon Chillar were both released

4) Player’s highlights/low-lights: Jones’ highlight essentially comprises getting the nod as the starter for outside linebacker during the playoffs.  Unfortunately, essentially the rest of the season is his lowlight where he didn’t see much time on the field outside of special teams.

5) Player’s contribution to the overall team success: Next to nothing; Jones played sparingly outside of special teams during the regular season but active in all but 1 game.  Jones posted 17 tackles and no sacks during the regular season

6) Player’s contributions in the playoffs: Surprisingly high; a bit of a surprise starter during the playoffs, the Packers benched long time starter Erik Walden in favor of Jones and he posted 1 sack and 4 tackles against the Giants and was generally solid against the run.

Season Report Card:

(C) Level of expectations met during the season

  1. Jones started to show up late in the year. He played a good game against the Giants in the playoff. Can he build on the late year performance goinf into next year.

His grade of C- is right on.

    1. I thought he played very well taking over for Aaron Kampman in 2009 (ironically my very first article was written about that), so I definitely think he has a shot if he doesn’t get injured.

  2. Oh, Brad Jones, how you made me look like a fool.

Brad, I picked you as my dark-horse to win the starting OLB opposite CMIII coming into the season, and what do you do? Well, nothing, that’s what.

Yeah, I know, Brad, you were the post-season starter. Well, that’s nice, but it’s too little to late, Mr. Jones.

Don’t say anything- I wish you well.. But it will be best to just turn and walk away.

      1. That’s exactly how Brad Jones made me feel.

What was I thinking, investing so heavily in him?

…He always was way too smart for me. I was way out of my league

  3. He may develop into a Adequate starter, but it would probably require adding some studs on the D line to help compensate. More likely, Jones will be a reliable back up and good special teams player but the ROLB spot will need to be filled by a more dynamic player.
