Packer News 12/24/10 – 12/30/10

AL:  Well, it’s good to be back in the CheeseheadRadio newsroom. A lot has happened since I was here last. The Packers played their two most complete games of the season and the Vikings played a home game in Detroit. Next you’re going to tell me Packers Santa called in to  CheeseheadRadio. What?

Holly: Seems like plenty of hard-to-believe things have happened lately. For instance, Chad Clifton was named to the Pro Bowl, while Tramon Williams and Aaron Rodgers were NOT. Both were named as first alternates for the game, with AJ Hawk, BJ Raji, Donald Driver and Josh Sitton being second alternates. Of course, none of the Packers will be able to attend anyway, as they’ll probably be in Dallas preparing for the Super Bowl that weekend.

AL:  We can only hope, Holly. But step one will be defeating the Chicago Bears this Sunday. While it’s a game that means little to the Bears as far as playoff seedings go, Lovie Smith is claiming he will play his starters and Chicago will do their best to deny their rivals a playoff berth. Devin Hester came out and said as much this week, as did Brian Urlacher.  Of course, it could all be a smoke screen, but now all we need is Urlacher to start yapping about how much of a better team the Bears are and we’ll be all set.

Holly: Any additional motivation is always good, but what would be most helpful would be another performance by Aaron Rodgers like we saw against the Giants. With a career-best 404 yards and a 139 passer rating, the well-rested Rodgers seemed invigorated and as sharp as we’ve seen. His footwork in the pocket was flawless, he got rid of the ball when he needed to and most importantly, he remembered to slide.

AL: So true, Holly.  I don’t know about you, but my heart was definitely in my throat the first time I saw Rodgers take off out of the pocket. That was about the only time I got nervous watching the Packers Giants game. The Packers came out like a team possessed and only two lucky plays for the Giants even kept them close. But you just knew that if the Giants were going to have to continually throw to beat the Packers, that the interceptions would come. And boy did they ever.

Holly:  Yes, and it could have been worse, Al. As is the unfortunate norm, the Packers dropped a few sure INTS as well. They’re not as likely to get as many chances against the Bears, so when the opportunity arises, they HAVE to capitalize. If the Packers allow Jay Cutler to get comfortable, he has the arm to make plays. Pressure him and pick off a pass early, and it could be a fun time for the Packers.

News from the Packers Twitterverse:

Holly:  Ryan Grant showed he has a sense of humor this week, being able to make light of his season of inactivity.  When the NFL Pro Bowl selections were announced, Grant tweeted, “Damn i just found out i didnt make the PRO BOWL….SNUBBED again lol”

Al: There was plenty of talk and some anger amongst Packers fans when the Pro Bowl selections were announced. Phil Hanrahan, author of Life after Favre
I need to be more zen about the Pro Bowl selections. Maybe tomorrow.

Holly:  Some injured Packers players were getting pretty excited watching the Packers rout the Giants and wishing they could have been a part of it. Jermichael Finley tweeted, “Someone Next season is going to pay for the pain im feeling on Sundays. – #Yotto2011.” That was followed up soon after by Mike Neal who said, “The hardest thing for me to do is WATCH my team because I should be PLAYING with my team…ill be back 100xs better…#BELIVETHAT #GOPACKGO”

Al: And CheeseheadTV’s Aaron Nagler had a very appropriate comment in response to a question from a bears fan. Asked where a Bears fan going to the game this weekend should park, Nagler simply replied, “Milwaukee.” I’m still laughing at that one.

And that folks, was the  Cheesehead Radio Tweet of the Week.
