Packer News 11/08/10 – 11/18/10

AL: After a week off for rest and relaxation, the Packers returned to the practice field this week. Curiously, with two Dome games coming up, Mike McCarthy had the team practicing outside in 35 degree weather. Is he looking ahead to the Pats, Giants and Bears games? Or is he just being Mike McCarthy? As Aaron Nagler wrote in a blog post, one of these years, he’ll figure this all out…

Holly: One thing he did figure out was that there was a game worth watching on TV Sunday Night. According to McCarthy, the only game he watched on his off weekend was the Bears – Vikings game. McCarthy said he always make a point of watching Sunday or Monday Night games featuring their next opponent. It gives him a bit of a head start before the game film arrives.

Al: There was some good news for Cullen Jenkins this week. Jenkins practiced for the first time since week 1 without the club cast on his hand. Sporting just a small pad on the hand, Jenkins worked on getting some flexibility and strength back to his wrist and fingers. Jenkins thinks he lost 4 or 5 sacks because of the club

Holly: And there was bad news for Mark Tauscher this past week, as he became the Packers 6th starter and 11th player overall on Injured Reserved this season. In an unusual move, Mike McCarthy revealed that the Packers have asked him to travel with the team, participate in meetings and basically stay a full-time member of the team. That is not always the case with individuals that are on IR or PUP.

Al: And now officially part of the team is rookie running back James Starks, recently activated off of the PUP list. Mike McCarthy has been taking a lot of questions about the move, and has sung the praises of Starks. McCarthy said, “He had the No. 28 jersey on, and he looked dang good in it today. He’s a big, physical, athletic runner.” He went on to say that Starks still has a lot to learn and that special teams will be his ticket onto the active gameday roster.

Holly: And finally, it’s time to bid farewell to a Packers veteran who surely gave his all for the team, Al Harris. After seven years with the Packers, the 35-year old Harris was given his walking papers and was soon signed by the Miami Dolphins. Whether or not you felt Harris could still be a key contributor, we all gained a huge dose of respect for Harris as we watched his painful rehab documented on video. Cheesehead Nation wishes you all the best, Al. You were a fine Packer.

Al : .. And, those were the top stories for the week… Cheesehead Radio now brings you “News from the Packers Twitterverse…”

[Sound File: Twitterverse]

Holly:  You’d think it would have stopped by now, but it seems Ryan Grant is still getting dopey tweets from clueless fans asking if he’ll be back for the playoffs. To the latest one, Grant’s tired response was simply, “Somebody please tell him…”

Al:  I was looking over some of Mike Neal’s tweets, when I spotted an interesting one. He’s frequently talking about motivation, and here was a tweet saying, “This is an article that is laminated in my house for Motivation. Read it!” Clicking the link brought me to a blog post where Monty from Total Packers is just killing the Packers for their awful decision to use their second round pick on Neal. Maybe I’m easily impressed, but I always think it’s cool when a player admits to reading blog posts about themselves. And congrats to Monty for making Mike Neal’s bulletin board.

Holly: Jason Wilde teased his twitter fans this week as he and his wife found out the sex of the baby they are expecting. “They say it takes a real man to have a son”, Wilde tweeted, just before adding, “That’s why we’re having another GIRL!.” Either way, Jason, it’s a great thing and the Cheesehead Radio crew wish you nothing but the best.

Al: And finally, some more Packers baby talk. A new member of the Packers family was brought into the world today, as Nick Barnett announced on twitter that his wife had given birth to a baby boy. They named the child Knixon and Barnett happily exclaimed, “King Nixon has been born !!!! Long live the king!!!  I don’t see how anything could top that, so Nick, I’m awarding you…

  1. Finally got to listen to the podcast on my commute today…

In answer to your question, Al, I’d say the Favre monkey is off of the Packers’ backs. His name and presence haven’t been emphasized nearly as much by the players or media for this game. That can only be a good sign.

However, the Vikings monkey is still hanging on, and the Chicago monkey has sunk its claws in.

    1. I don’t think it is, yet Chad. A resounding win the first time around could have done it, but that’s not what it was. They actually rather fortunate to have not lost. Anyway, lets see if they can stomp the Vikes this week…
