Bears 20, Packers 17 – First Impressions – NFL Week 3, 2010

ALLGBP.com All Green Bay Packers All the Time

The Packers and Bears squared off in a Monday Night battle that would be marred by poor play and penalties nullifying big plays. Here are my first impressions as the game was being played:

As the inactives were announced, I found it very interesting that all four tight ends and all three fullbacks are active. WIth the tight ends, I’ll be looking for a three tight end red zone set, with Finley, Lee and Crabtree and the Packers throwing the ball out of that set.

With the fullbacks, I’m thinking we might see passes to the running backs substituting for some runs tonight, especially with Nance inactive and Jackson as the only true halfback. Not to mention a power 3 fullback backfield.

Derrick Martin showed on the opening kickoff why he is on this team.

Dom Capers goes Psycho-crazy on first possession. Does that make any sense?

The Packers are consistently doing a nice job surrounding the kick returner on kickoffs. The returners may pick up some yards, but there are no lanes for them to break off a big one.

Jay Cutler throws some real head-scratching interceptions…

Twenty minutes in and Cutler already has that “deer in the headlights” look. This is looking like a good night for the Packers…

We’re seeing the expected use of the short pass to the running backs as a substitute for running the ball. Only in the second quarter, but we’ve probably seen as many passes to the running backs as in the first two games combined.

Mason Crosby just can’t handle prosperity. Just as he starts making field goals, he has to start messing up kickoffs.

As I have said, I’m pretty worried about Mathsay and his ability to handle kicking in the NFL. It’s just a feeling, but I don’t feel like he can handle the pressure.

One thing I can be sure of:  Kregg Lumpkin wouldn’t have 3 carries for -3 yards in the first half, as Jackson does. He always gains positive yardage. He’d sure look good back in a Packer uniform right now…

Sitton was knocked on his ass on the blocked field goal. Tried to block two players, didn’t pinch in, Peppers comes through. Big mistake by Sitton there…

As soon as Rodgers rolled out on 3rd and goal, I felt he would end up running it in. He did a great job holding the defenders as long as possible by feinting pass.  Then the rest of the play seemed to take place in slow motion, as Rodgers just makes it to the pylon.

A plethora of penalties at the worst possible times…  They’re baaaaaaaacccccckkkkkkkkk…

Mike McCarthy, I’m just completely flummoxed by your challenge.

Mike McCarthy has shown tonight why he is not as good a coach as he’s been given credit for. Game management crucial times  is often lacking.  Been seeing it for years and he just hasn’t improved.

I 100% believe you let Forte score and get the ball back with over a minute with a chance to tie. What McCarthy did (hoping to block a chip shot field goal) gives you the least possible chance of winning the game. This loss is NOT on McCarthy, but he could have made some moves at the end to try to salvage it, instead he just helped the Bears and conceded.

Everyone seems to be screaming about the refs. The Packers got what they deserved. They played stupid football. Most of the calls were correct. A few were marginal, but that happens in every game.

Nick Collins really needs to hold onto the ball. Starting with last season, he has dropped a good number of sure interceptions.

We’re there two or three interceptions called back by penalties? In any case, the Packers let Cutler off the hook big time.

Well, in my season record prediction, I did plan on a split with Chicago, but I would have preferred if the Bears won the game on their own.

Time for a “Come to Jesus” meeting already?

Only 3 games in… “everything will be fine.”

  1. Pete….you must be drunk if you think that MM is doing a fine job. He is just as much at fault for the way the game ended as the players were. Did you see the challenge and the wasted timeout? If you don’t think a coach needs to be held accountable for some of the issues we had in the game: PENALTIES, POOR EXECUTION, POOR GAME MANAGEMENT….then you have never coached or played a sport before in your life. And if that’s the case, never get on this site again because you don’t know anything about life in general and I don’t want to waste my time explaining things to you. If MM had to grade himself out in that game….if he gave himself a C- or better, he should be kicked in the teeth. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!

  2. DARB is right, Pete, you don’t have a clue. How can you honestly think that MM is not at fault for that game. It was his decision to challenge that fumble and waste that timeout. He is the coach who as been made penalties a “point of emphasis” for the last year and we see how well that worked out. He failed to give our offense an opportunity to tie the game and instead was looking to have a kicker who has never missed an extra point miss a FG that was even shorter than that! Also, MM has decided to let Slocum remain on his staff when it is clear to everyone that he is completely incompetent. That game falls squarely on the shoulders of our fearless leader. Instead you side with the one person stupid enough to keep a team this talented from the superbowl. Nice work Pete!

  3. Deciding to try and stop the Bears instead of letting them score was the worst coaching decision I have seen in many, many years. MM actually hoped or expected that the kicker would MISS the FG. What a moron.

He just gave up, is what he did. Instead of letting them score a TD and giving OUR BEST PLAYER (Aaron Rodgers) a chance to win the game, he gave up and let the clock run out, leaving us with nothing more than another chance to incur a few more penalties before the ball was blown dead for good.

  4. We are going to be a run first team that plays great defense and controls the clock. (We threw the ball close to 50 times) We are going to get the penalties fixed in practice. (Last year and this year we are one of the most penalized teams in the league) We are not going to play musical chairs with the offensive line this season. We want our line to get comfortable. (Our #1 draft pick is learning 2 positions, and at one time this preseason TJ Lang played EVERY position on the O-line besides center, along with Newhouse and Colledge.)

MM talks out of both sides of his mouth. He needs to produce a playoff win without Brett Favre for me to give as much credit as you give him….PETE. Haven’t sniffed a playoff win since 2007.

  5. Pete, McCarthy made two of the biggest mistakes a coach can possibly make at the end of that game. I have gone over them above ad nauseum. MM is coach, he is paid a huge amount of money to THINK. He does not have to run, throw, catch punt AND THINK, he just has to THINK. The end of the game was completely inexcusable. I, as a complete moron fan was screaming let them score, because I as an idiot fan knew it was the only possible way to win the game. I, as an idiot fan knew for a fact the fumble was legally recovered by the Bears on the first replay. Why should the Packers settle for an average coach when there are tons of GREAT coaches available. He is a fine OC, not great, but that is all he is.

  6. Trevor Pryce was released by the Ravens today. I was thinking about picking him up, but then I saw some film of a construction worker in Omaha sent me from his highschool days and I think I am going to bring him in for a workout. Plays with great leverage and has a great motor.

  7. I am a little upset right now at ManBearPig. I kept 3 fullbacks because they are great on special teams. Isn’t it obvious that this move continues to pay off? Korey Hall has been an absolute juggernaut on the coverage units. Haven’t you noticed?

  8. Personally, I’m not a fan of keeping 3 FBs on the roster. TE’s are much more valuable. Especially ones that can also play defense.

  9. MM needs to utilize Finley to get Jennings the ball more. Jennings should be in single coverage all day. Let’s not just bomb balls to him deep once in a while. Feed him often and early. I know I would’ve like the rock a little more when I played. I have some expertise in beating Detroit. So if we want to shine this week, we give Jennings the ball.

  10. MM told me we would be moving different players, especially Jennings, into the slot this year. Last game I did not see anyone but Driver lined up in the slot. Did he lie to me again?

  11. Hey Walter!!! Nice to hear from you again!! Sure wish we had you returning punts instead of the Tramon Williams. I’m sure that MM and TT realize that we are just one sprained ankle away from undrafted rookie Sam Shields starting at CB and Bush starting in the nickel. I’m sure they’ll find a returner that was as good as you were. If they don’t we could be in real trouble. You were awesome…that sucks that your career ended after you went to Washington. Give me a call some time and we can do a duet of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” I have it on youtube as well if you wanna check it out. If you see Max Zendejas around the hood, please kick him in the balls for me.

    -Majik Man 1989

  12. Hey Majik – Totally agree, Theodore not addressing the returner situation in the offseason could prove to be his MOST costly failure this year. Followed by failing to add another pass rusher.

  13. C’MON MAN HAND ME THE ROCK!!! I RAN FOR A G-NOTE IN ’91!!!! COBB-WEBB IS BACK!!!

and yeah, i agree Tramon is too valuable to get hurt on a return that we will have a holding penalty on anyways.

  14. If Collins isn’t going to catch the ball, the least he could do is hit somebody. When was the last BIG HIT we have seen from our secondary? It may have been in 2007 by Atari Bigby vs. the Seahawks. We need somebody to be an enforcer in the secondary. The NFL is full of ball hawks now…not enough guys that will knock you out. The league is to blame for that as well with all their terrible rules to protect offensive players. I gotta go…..my damn nose is bleeding….crap!!

  16. I think we have to take some time to let BJ get comfortable at RB before we start jumping the gun. He hasn’t run well, but he also hasn’t gotten a chance to get comfortable either. I would like to see him get the ball 20 times and see what he could do. He gets it once and then doesn’t touch it again for the rest of the quarter. Give him the ball and let’s just see what we have!! Remember when I ran over Steve Atwater and took that kick back against the Lions my rookie year? Suck it Fullwood.

    1. Sorry Darrell, you were one of my least favorite draft picks. i cursed when your pick was announced. i would turn out to be right…

Jackson getting more carries will just mean more plays for no gain.

  17. Why don’t they ever go 5-Wide anymore with Swain. I know that we have Finley, but it seems like we have plenty of packages where he is off the field anyway with Crabtree and Lee in there….let’s try to use Swain a bit in the passing game and go 5-Wide. Rodgers will find the mismach.

  18. Where in the world is Jersey Al?? We are all here giving comments and he doesn’t even care. Answer our questions and concerns please. If you are busy looking up youtube highlight footage of Lumpkin just forget it….there isn’t any. Keep up buddy, all the great Packers are here and we want your input!!

  19. Hey Jersey Al, three things in this world are dead:
Chivalry, MM’s left eye, and the rap-around draw. Am I right?

  20. I was one of your least favorite draft picks? When I was drafted Lindy Infante said that you can’t have too many Cadillacs in the garage. I ran like the next Eric Dickerson. I had a 99 yard run at Minnesota…how did you not fall in love with me?? Suck it Woodside.
