According to Pete Dougherty of Packernews.com, the Green Bay Packers today have signed the following players to the practice squad:
Green Bay Packers Practice Squad:
- Graham Harrell
- Robert Francois
- Breno Giacomini
- Anthony Levine
- Chris Campbell
- Maurice Simpkins
- Chastin West
- James Johnson, RB, from Cincinnati
The Packer sooooooo need a defensive lineman as emergency insurance, yet Kareem Copeland of PackersNews.com told me on twitter that he asked Thompson about this and he seemed unconcerned? Huh? Wynn, Toribio and Talley all gone and you’re not concerned about what happens if one of the 6 DL on the roster gets injured and can’t play?
Also, how ironic is it that after two years on the #Packers roster, Giacomini easily makes it onto the practice squad?
Simpkins really made an impression in the Chiefs game. While he was far from perfect, his effort was outstanding, unlike Obiozor, who I thought looked like he didn’t care. Well, Simpkins gets to stick around.
Although I’ve been rooting for Charles Dillon to stick around, I have to admit, Chastin West performed better in preseason than Dillon. West is not as flashy, but he is a physical receiver that catches everything thrown his way. A good guy to keep on the PS. (He can return kicks, also)
Packers Players claimed on waivers by other teams:
- Kregg Lumpkin – Tampa Bay Bucs
- Spencer Havner – Detroit Lions
- Cyril Obiozor – Arizona Cardinals
- Anthony Toribio – Kansas City Chiefs
- Evan Dietrich-Smith – Seattle Seahawks
Back before the 2009 training camp, I wrote that one thing I wanted to see, was a bunch of Packer cuts get picked up by other teams. The reason, of course, is that it’s a good sign of the strength of your own team. Well, if that’s an accurate statement, then we should all feel good about this year’s team.

What does a practice squad player get paid? and does it count in the salary cap?(although i know it is a uncapped year i am just wondering.)
I found this: The current salary of practice squad players, through 2010, is $5,200 per week. That amount will remain unchanged if 2011 is an uncapped year (that is, there is no salary cap), and will rise by $500 per week if there is a salary cap during that season. In 2012, the salary will be $5,700 per week.

Havner got claimed by three teams but Lions won out. Also surprised about a DL. Maybe they’re conifdent one of Wynn, Toribio, or Talley will be around should that need emerge.
It seems bizarre to me that they would cut Wynn and let both Talley and Toribio walk. TT must be burning the midnight oil tonight to find someone…
I just don’t get keeping Giacomini on the PS, especially after hearing what went down with the Vikings. If we (and obviously the management/coaches) think Breno was the 11th man in line, or at least the 3rd RT in line, then why all the fuss?
I kind of understand the whole division rival thing, but it’s like fearing to let the Vikings grab Allen Barbe. It wouldn’t really be a notable boost to their team.
I think it was more that the Packers had already invested considerable time in Giacomini and were not ready to just give up on him yet. It being the Vikings certainly was a factor, but I don’t think it was the main factor.
Breno and MM/TT can best be analogized as “The Monster” and Dr. Frankensien. They’re so obsessed with the expirement they can’t let go until the “Villagers” and their pitchforks trap them in bowels of Lambeau Field.
If a practice player is selected by another time
during the season, do its time have to right to now
put that player on their 53 man sq. to protect him.
I assume you meant “team”, rather than “time”, and the answer is yes. They would have to put them on the active roster to keep them.
Havner with the Lions? That sucks! Glad to see a lot of the other guys caught on with other teams. Also glad to see Harrell fall through. I thought he might be grabbed by the Cards.
Packers led the NFL in players claimed…
I wonder if they had a conversation with Jarius Wynn about coming back should an injury occur. He didn’t get picked up anywhere else, so maybe we haven’t seen the last of him yet.
Certainly a possibility. He’s not the prototypical body type for a 3-4DE, though. But he would at least know the defense.
Just a heads up, rumors (Cheesehead TV)are that Clifton Smith, recently cut by the Bucs might sign with Green Bay as a returner. His twitter account says “Green Bay here I come”, so that’s a promising sign.
I’m doubtful. He has injury issues and he fumbled 7 times in 20 games with the Bucs. Only if he came dirt cheap might TT take a chance.
“Dirt Cheap” might have been the operative phrase. Evidently Smith tweeted something about “doing what’s best for his family” after leaving town. That tells me he might have thought he was worth more money.
It looks like the Dolphins are also taking a look at him. On another note, Donovan Warren was released by the Jets, I know he was a big name coming into to the draft that ended up not getting drafted, but supposedly he was going to be drafted in the 1st three rounds, sounds like a good practice squad player to me.
I think I saw in the Jersey papers here today that Warren is on the Jets practice squad.
